Skilled tree pruning in Auckland
We provide formative pruning for young trees, weight reduction for mature specimens, and specialist fruit tree care across Auckland. Whether you need branches reduced from your house, more light through your canopy, or careful management of a heritage tree, our qualified arborists deliver precise, considered work.

Based in Grey Lynn since 1992, we've pruned trees in gardens across Ponsonby, Herne Bay, Westmere, Remuera, and the wider Auckland region.
Every job finishes with a thorough clean up not just the pruning, but the complete result.
Formative pruning
Young trees benefit from early structural guidance. Formative pruning establishes sound branch architecture in the first few years of growth, encouraging a balanced canopy and reducing the need for corrective work later. This is particularly important for specimen trees planted in Auckland's character villa gardens, where space is limited and good form matters.
We assess each young tree's natural growth habit and make targeted cuts to promote strong scaffold branches. Early intervention is gentle, small cuts now prevent large problems in a decade.
Precision thinning
Selective branch removal increases light and improves air circulation without compromising privacy or tree vitality. Precision thinning is not about making a tree smaller, it's about opening the canopy to let light through while maintaining the tree's natural shape and density.
This is one of the most common requests we receive from Auckland homeowners. A mature tree that blocks afternoon light into a living room doesn't need to come down. Careful thinning can transform the light in your home while keeping the tree healthy and your garden private.
Fruit tree pruning
We specialise in managing heirloom and organic fruit trees in Auckland's urban gardens. Plum trees, citrus, feijoas, and apple trees each have specific pruning requirements and timing. Our approach balances fruit production with long term tree health, we're not maximising next season's crop at the expense of the tree.
For plum trees, winter pruning while the tree is dormant reduces the risk of silver leaf disease. Citrus trees in Auckland can be lightly shaped year round but benefit from more substantial pruning in late winter. Feijoas respond well to post harvest thinning to maintain airflow.
If you have an old fruit tree that's become unmanageable, overgrown, crossing branches, poor fruit, we can restore it over one or two seasons with careful reduction and structural pruning.
Deadwooding
Dead and diseased branches pose a safety risk, particularly in Auckland's storm season. Deadwooding removes this risk and improves the tree's appearance. In most cases, deadwood removal is a permitted activity under Auckland Council rules and does not require resource consent.
We identify dead, dying, and diseased wood throughout the canopy and remove it cleanly, cutting back to healthy tissue. This is routine maintenance that keeps mature trees safe and looking their best.
When to prune in Auckland
The best time to prune depends on the species and the objective.
Winter (June–August): Ideal for most deciduous trees. The dormant season allows clear visibility of branch structure and reduces stress on the tree. Essential timing for stone fruit trees to prevent silver leaf.
Spring (September–November): Good for light shaping of evergreens and hedging. Avoid heavy pruning of spring flowering species until after they've bloomed.
Summer (December–February): Light maintenance pruning is fine. Not the time for heavy structural work, the tree is using all its energy for growth.
Year-round: Deadwood removal and emergency work can be done at any time.
We provide seasonal advice specific to your trees. Species in various Auckland microclimates have different needs, there's no single rule.
Auckland Council tree consent
Many trees in Auckland are protected under the Auckland Unitary Plan or by specific council schedules. Pruning a protected tree without consent is an offence.
We can assess your trees, advise whether consent is required, and assist with the council application process. We've provided arboricultural advice for council planning hearings and resource consent applications across Auckland, this is a core part of our consultancy work.
If you're unsure whether your tree is protected, get in touch before you prune. A quick assessment can save significant trouble.

"Chris from Lifestyle Tree Care has been managing the trees on my property for six years now. He has regularly pruned our fruit trees and managed the much larger trees too. He's a skilled and confident technician who brings a positive and energetic approach to each task, all the way through to clean up."

The ideal pruning time depends on the tree species and the objective. Winter is best for deciduous trees. Light pruning works year round for most species. We provide seasonal advice specific to your trees and Auckland's climate.
